Thomas J. Byrd, M.D., is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist at Byrd & Wyandotte, serving patients in southeast Michigan. He specializes in cataract surgery, LASIK, corneal disease, and more.
Dr. Byrd graduated from Trenton High School in three years as Salutatorian and went on to the University of Michigan where he earned both Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees in a special six-year program called Inteflex. He received his medical degree and went on to a year of internal medicine internship and a three-year ophthalmology residency at Henry Ford Hospital.
Dr. Byrd went on to a cornea fellowship through a rigorous two-year program at the Louisiana State University (LSU) Eye Center in New Orleans. He trained there under internationally-known corneal and refractive surgery pioneers, Dr. Herbert E. Kaufman and Dr. Maguerite McDonald. During the second of his two years of fellowship, Dr. Byrd managed the excimer laser program at Louisiana State University.
Dr. Byrd then returned to the Henry Ford Health System as Director of the Cornea Service where he was responsible for teaching cornea and refractive surgery to the residents and credentialing the surgeons on staff. Dr. Byrd stays active in professional organizations, such as the Medical Executive Board (MEB) at EyeCare Partners on the Advocacy Committee.
